BOUNI’S FOOD ANCESTRY
—“Born & Bread Lebo-terranean”
It really began in the early 1900s, when some Greeks fled Turkey for Lebanon, where they met Lebanese locals before eventually emigrating to Australia in 1953.
The family settled in Sydney’s Surry Hills, where Jidi (grandfather) opened a pastry shop and began roasting nuts and coffee - a family trade now in the custodianship of its third generation.
Fast-forward to the 1970s - arguably the golden era of dining - and the Surry Hills venues Emad’s and Hunna’s became icons of Lebanese hospitality.
They were known for lively dinners, late-night energy, and that unmistakable feeling of being welcomed like family - with warmth, generosity, and connection.
◌ Today, Bar Bouni continues that heritage - an ode to Lebo-terranean dining, feasting, and heartfelt hospitality.
“Lebo-terranean” - Well-travelled - influenced by flavours and experiences from across the Mediterranean, yet proudly rooted in Melbourne.
Bar Bouni celebrates shared meals, familiar faces, flowing beverages, and the enduring art of hosting - creating an inclusive space where food, conversation, and connection take centre stage.
Located in Melbourne’s Arts Precinct, we aspire to be both a neighbourhood favourite and a dining destination - a place for locals, residents, and visitors of the arts to come together over flavour, culture, and a touch of family chaos.
